'Ruddigore' (1887)
‘Ruddigore’; or, 'The Witch's Curse' is a two-act comic operetta by Gilbert and Sullivan, set in the Cornish village of Rederring, where eligible men are desperate to marry Rose Maybud. This includes her friend, timid and sensitive Robin Oakapple and his foster brother, the confident Richard Dauntless. A curse on the Baronetcy of Ruddigore forces each Sir Ruddigore to commit a crime daily, until Robin, actually the rightful Sir Ruthven Murgatroyd who has hidden his identity, is forced to reveal himself by his melancholic brother, Despard.
