What’s Blackout Weekend?
The Blackout Weekend campaign is all about raising awareness of energy waste on campus. But we need YOU to make it happen!
How it Works:
On Friday evening, we’re coming together as one big team of students and staff to sweep through our campus buildings and switch off non-essential equipment that’s been left on for the weekend. We’ll split into teams, hit the buildings, and make sure nothing unnecessary is draining energy while we’re off enjoying our weekend.
We’ll even do a quick pre-audit beforehand on the 18th of October, marking essential and non-essential equipment so it’s a breeze on the night.
Why Should You Join?
- Make a Difference: Every light, computer, or piece of equipment left on wastes energy and money. By participating, you’re helping to cut down on this waste and showing everyone the power of small actions.
- Boost Sustainability: Your involvement will help us save energy and money, reduce our carbon footprint, and make our campus a greener place. Plus, it’s a great way to meet like-minded people who care about sustainability.
- Team Spirit: This is more than just an energy-saving exercise – it’s about bringing together students and staff from all across Queen Mary to work towards a common goal.
- Volunteering Award: Make sure you sign-up through the volunteering portal to make sure you can get hours towards your bronze, silver or gold award.
How We Measure Success:
We’ll record how much equipment we turn off and use that data to calculate the energy and cost savings. Plus, we’ll compare this weekend’s energy use with others to see the real impact of our efforts.
Let’s Take Action!
We’re calling on the Student Union and every student who cares about making a difference to join us. Come and get involved, meet the sustainability team and ask any questions you might have!
