At the QMUL TEDx Society, we aim to create a friendly space with a relaxed environment for students to come and present any ideas they want to share. Ideas can range from “The future of energy” to “Why I’m interested in dancing”. The participants will develop presentational skill, story-telling skills and the confidence that will allow them to better articulate themselves. Students will also enjoy having deep discussions where they get to express themselves and socialize with like-minded people.
The TEDx Society consists of two main activities which take place over the year. The first one is executing a yearly TEDx event at the end of the academic year, where society members can apply to volunteer! This way we bring TEDx to our university campus and spread awareness of different interesting and important global topics around the Queen Mary student community. The second type of activities our society proposes are meetups/sessions/workshops that bring our members together as well as interaction in order to drive intellectual development around students. We also bring in former TEDx presenters for discussion groups.
Our society is different from any others as we have the uniqueness of setting up a voting poll for our members. In fact, the concept will be in a democratic manner of choosing topics/activities for the purpose of having true interaction with all of our members. From our own experience, by joining societies, we often felt like having little control on the events, as not being part of the committee, while having great ideas of other events those societies could propose. Therefore our society makes sure through monthly interactions (such as an internal forum and voting polls for the topics to be discussed) that our society members will have their word to say. As it enables to polish the events in the interests of our society members, it increases motivation to participate and helps to build a strong community at QMUL.
Hence, the main purpose of bringing this society to QMUL regroup a bunch of intellectually curious students, more specifically TEDx lovers just like us, while proposing activities that are unique in their kind and nothing like the others proposed on campus!
What is TED?
TED is a nonprofit devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks (18 minutes or less). TED began in 1984 as a conference where Technology, Entertainment and Design converged, and today covers almost all topics — from science to business to global issues — in more than 100 languages. Meanwhile, independently run TEDx events help share ideas in communities around the world.
