Engineers Without Borders

About

Putting global responsibility at the heart of engineering

Welcome to the 2022-2023 Engineers Without Borders Society at Queen Marys!

Engineers Without Borders QMUL is an EWB-UK affiliated student group that aims to inspire and drive change within the engineering community with a focus on sustainability, the environment and global responsibility. As a member of the society, you will be a part of a team of enthusiastic students who are working on year-long engineering projects that will allow you to trial your ideas and concepts!

Our goal is to see a real change in engineering sustainably, and our community will allow you to network with students who are working to reach a safe and just future for all. We have a wide range of events for you to enjoy including fun socials, challenge events, trips and technical skills development. We hope to encourage students and empower communities to pursue careers in sustainability and international development.

What we have to offer

We have arranged a wide range of events for this year including challenges and competitions, to make most of your experience with us we’d love for you to participate in as much as you can!

  • Weekly project sessions. Hands on experience to design and fabricate devices on sustainability focused engineering projects. Take part in our continuing projects from previous years or come up with your own ideas! Maker space will be available for groups that are in the build stage of their concepts. Weekly meetings will be held in Bancroft 3.21 every Wednesday from 1st Februrary.
  • Social Events. Throughout the year there will be a range of socials you can take part in. Social events will cover awareness months, as well all as fun holiday socials for everyone to take part in. Social events will be free for all society members, other students may attend with a small contribution fee. Stay up to date with the latest details posted on our Instagram!
  • Speakers Series. We have organised industry speaker events open to all students who want to network and receive academic support. Industry professionals will share an insight into their career journey and what steps you could take for a bright future. There will be plenty of opportunities to ask questions, all speaker series will be free events so make sure you bring your friends along too!
  • Outreach. Would you like improve your presentation and speaking skills? Our outreach event will be perfect for you! EWB-QMUL will collaborate with local schools to inspire students who are interested in a career in STEM. Share your experiences and inspire the next generation of engineers!
  • Workshops. We know how important it is to be proficient in technical skills. Are you unsure where to start? We will be hosting a variety of training sessions to help cover the basics. CAD training sessions and electronics workshops will be held this year to help you develop your technical abilities. These will help you make progress in your year long projects with us, the best projects will be in for a prize!
  • Designathon. EWB hosts a student designathon every year, a month long design challenge in February to produce practical solutions to real world problems. For the event you may sign up as a team of up to five or individually. The challenge concludes with a final event at which prizes will be awarded by a judging panel. We are hoping our student group will take part in this year!

Next year, you might get the chance to lead this society.
