Congratulations to three of our brilliant Societies, BL Drama, QM Comedy and PsiStar society were shortlisted for a National Societies Award this year for Most Improved Society, Best New Society and Best Society respectively.
To get shortlisted for the National Societies Awards is a HUGE achievement! They have been doing some fantastic things this year and whilst we sadly, didn't pick up any awards on the night, our students had a brilliant time being recognised on a national scale.
Here are some of the incredible things they have been doing this year that got them to the National Awards!
BL Drama Society - Shortlisted for Most Improved Society
BL Drama have worked incredible hard this year across a number of projects to improve their society. Working towards changing a culture in their society in support of the Students' Union's Zero Tolerance Campaign they have made it compulsory in their committee that all show directors received consent training to support tackling sexual harassment on campus. They have also worked with the Students' Union to improve the safety of their performance spaces and managed their budgets well to improve equipment whilst also keeping up large reserves in preparation to forecat future renevations or the possibliity to moving to a new performance space. They have brought in additional income, increased their membership numbers as well increased the offering of shows and workshops to its members.
Psi Star Society - Shortlisted for Best Society
Psi Star have done exceptionally well this year at increasing their offering of events and lectures to all members and have also worked hard to become more inclusive of postgraduates. They have offered several PhD workshops where current PhD students could deliver talks on their research to Undergraduates, inspiring the younger generation in their specialist feilds and continued education past undergradute degree level. They have had an extensive programme of events this year ranging from Trips Abroad, Balls and regular academic talks throughout the year. Their committee have been dedicated and learnt so much through their experiences.
Comedy Society - Shortlisted for Best New Society
Newly affiliated this year, Comedy Society have kicked off with a spectacular year! Overcoming the challenges of a new group they have hosted regular comedy nights at Drapers Bar. These comedy nights have not only entertained, but have provided a platform for budding new comedians to practise their material to audiences far exceeding that of any external comedy club for new acts. They have not only welcomed student comedians to the stage but also up and coming acts from across London. Alongside on campus performance opportuntiies they have actively sought opporunities in the comedic circle for students to get involved, with several members performing at Fringe festivals and competitions - a few who had some real success at! Further to the performance opportunities Comedy Society have also provided workshop opportunties for acts to come together and write their material. There has been a real sense of community amongst this new society and they are certainly one to watch over the coming years!
Well done to all our shortlisted societies - keep up the good work next year and those awards will be coming home next time! We're so glad to hear you had an inspiring and wonderful evening celebrating! Here are some comments and photo's from the evening....
