It is time to start thinking about the future of your society. All societies must elect a new committee during this academic year, to take over for 2018-19.
There are 2 ways in which societies can elect their new committee.
- Online elections
- At an Annual General Meeting (AGM)
Every society will need to complete an Elections Form by Thursday 1st March (9am) to let us know how you will be electing your new committee (online or in an AGM), what positions you will be electing (this will be your President and Treasurer plus any other positions), and a customised job description for each position. You’ll also to say when you’d like to hold your AGM, and how many people you’d expect to attend.
Societies can choose from one of three weeks in which to hold their AGMs and elections, see table below.

Once you’ve filled out the form you’ll be emailed with more specific information on how to run your election but, in the meantime, here’s some more information about each option below.
Online elections
This option means that the Students’ Union will set up an online election for you, using the information you provided in your Elections Form and make it go live on the round you’ve chosen. Once the election is set up for you you’ll be given the link to send to your members so that they can nominate themselves and vote (voting option will become available at the start of the voting period).
Annual General Meetings (AGMs)
This meeting is for all the members of the society to come together discuss and give feedback on society activity over the past year and vote on changes to the society’s aims & objectives, name or society policy. If you choose to not hold your elections online your AGM is where you will also vote on your elections, but this would be done by a paper ballot. Nominations should be submitted by members to you prior to the AGM. Based on the nominations, candidates running for positions should be advertised in your AGM agenda which should be sent to all members no later than 2 days prior to your AGM.
Check your Society Committee Resource Hub under Elections and AGM for a full AGM guide.
