Black History Month: Decolonise Society: Black Heritage Award Essay Competition

Welcome to our first annual Decolonise Black Heritage award! This is a Black History Month essay writing competition, for which all students across all years and degrees are eligible. All essay titles are welcome, as long as they pertain to the theme of black history/politics/identity/experience etc. If you have already written and submitted an essay like this for university, please feel free to submit this too, just let us know. 

This award will be kept in the hands of the students, there will be two rounds of judging: first, a panel of black student Queen Mary judges; second, a panel of professors from within Queen Mary and invited outside black academics. The top three selected essays will win vouchers to black-owned businesses. 

This first competition will be the foundation for a prestigious and lucrative award, with students being the exclusive beneficiaries.


There are two ways to get involved:


1. Entering the competition: available to all students

Entries are open during Black History Month, from the 1st of October to the 31st of October at 11:59 pm. Please submit your essay in an email attachment to with your full name, degree, year of study, and essay title. Essays will be marked anonymously. 


2. Joining the student panel: available to black students within Queen Mary

Sign-up to be a panellist through the link below. Applicants will be accepted on a rolling basis so ensure you apply quickly! This is an excellent opportunity and will be a brilliant addition to your CV, we will provide references.
