This is our first project update regarding the new Garrod Building project. Throughout the construction works we'll be releasing regular updates of what's going on, anticipated disruption and sharing photos of the works progressing in the lead up to our new spaces opening.
Throughout the construction works if you have any questions, comments or feedback that you'd like to share please email us at su-garrodproject@qmul.ac.uk.
What's been going on this week at the Garrod Building
-
This week has seen a focus on establishing the construction site for the works. You may have noticed hoarding going up, contractors in the building and some low level noise disruptions as rooms are cleared ready for the refurbishment works. All contractors on-site will enter through a seperate site entrance and their presence will be verified by Queen Mary Security to ensure student safety.
-
The Old Library, Ground Floor IT Suite G.18, Common Room, Pantry Cafe have all now closed so works in these spaces can commence. Other office spaces on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and LG floors have also been relocated and closed ready for the works. Many areas of the Garrod Building such as the Milton Lecture Theatre, Security Reception, Ex-Anatomy Museum and Student Enquiry Centre remain open until May. Other teaching rooms will also remain open for student group bookings and study until mid-May, but disruption is possible.
-
Various items and equipment have been removed from the Garrod Building and placed into temporary storage. You may have also noticed some of the portraits, art and historical artefacts have disappeared, these have all been removed to prevent them being damaged and are being kept safe in storage. Historical items and memorobilia has also started being removed from the current BLSA Building by the archive team who are keeping these in safe storage before they are moved to the new Garrod Building spaces.
-
On Tuesday student representatives from Barts and The London Students' Association (BLSA) and staff from the Students' Union met with the design team to agree the new furniture choices and the colours, fabrics and types for this furniture - we're really excited for you to see it all in September!
-
The Students' Union also met with representatives from the University and project team to agree the new IT, sound and lighting requirements for the new spaces.
-
Our licencing application for the new cafe & bar space is out for consultation in the local community, giving residents an opportunity to comment on the plans.

BLSA and the Students' Union have started developing plans for a series of farewell events for the current Griff Inn and BLSA Building to take place in June and early July.
