Meet Isabel Tinoco, a first year PhD student in Business and Management! Isabel has shared some of her experiences and top tips with us as someone on a Postgraduate Research (PGR) programme at Queen Mary University of London, part of our new Postgrad Spotlight series.

Read on to find out what it's like to undertake postgraduate research at Queen Mary, directly from a PGR!

What is your research topic?

My research focuses on the analysis of digital business models for small and medium-sized enterprises. How they have adapted to political, economic, social, and technological contexts in a constantly changing environment.

What have you found interesting about your research so far?

I just started my PhD, but I've discovered that small and medium-sized businesses drive a large part of the world's economies. It doesn't matter whether they're in advanced or developing countries, they all contribute economically, and that's incredible.

What is your favourite thing about doing research at Queen Mary?

The university has excellent facilities, qualified professors to supervise research topics, and opportunities to interact and exchange ideas with colleagues of different nationalities.

Where do you hope your research will take you in the future?

I would love for my research to provide companies with an up-to-date and useful overview of technological innovation. Business decision-making power should not be limited to large companies; SMEs must have access to current business models in order to improve their strategies.

What is your favourite spot on campus, and why?

I really enjoy spending time in the library, as it has quiet areas and places where I can discuss research topics with friends. Walking near the canal also helps me reflect and de-stress.

What has been your favourite part of the Students' Union?

Since joining QMUL, I've had the opportunity to participate in mindfulness and creative activities during exam time. I recently discovered the existence of a Bubble Tea Society, and I've been a huge fan of these drinks for a long time. Building a community strengthens student motivation.

What is your go-to study tip for someone who may be struggling with productivity at postgraduate level?

Creating habits and discipline is key to avoiding imposter syndrome. It's challenging and hard at first, but our future selves will appreciate the habit. Create a weekly schedule of productive hours, and once school is over, focus on spending time with your family and friends.

Do you have any tips for anyone applying for a postgraduate course?

Yes, it's good to write your research proposal in a structured, meaningful, and clear way. The topic doesn't have to be ideal; just make sure there's a coherence between the topic and your professional purpose. Seek guidance from students already pursuing a postgraduate degree; we love helping new prospects.

What is one piece of advice that you would give to a person who is soon starting their postgraduate study or research at Queen Mary?

Don't rush into everything having to be perfect; look for courses that will give you graduate-level skills. Create a weekly or daily routine to avoid procrastination. Follow the school's social media channels to participate in various events that will expand your mind and help you make useful connections for your graduate studies.
