Understanding Hinduism: A Journey Through One of the World’s Oldest Living Traditions

Hinduism, often called Sanatana Dharma, meaning “the eternal way”, is one of the world’s oldest and most diverse religions, with roots going back over 5,000 years. Unlike many other faiths, it isn’t defined by a single founder, scripture, or set of beliefs. Instead, it’s a vast and evolving collection of philosophies, traditions, and practices that continue to guide millions of people around the world today.

At its core, Hinduism is about balance, between the self and the universe, the material and the spiritual, the individual and the collective. It teaches that all living beings are connected through the divine essence known as Brahman, the ultimate reality that exists within and beyond everything.

Core Beliefs and Philosophy

Hinduism embraces many different paths to spiritual growth, reflecting its deep respect for diversity of thought and practice. Some of its key ideas include:

  • Dharma – living ethically and fulfilling one’s duty in harmony with others and nature.

  • Karma – the universal law of cause and effect, where every action has consequences.

  • Reincarnation – the belief that the soul is reborn through many lives on its journey toward liberation.

  • Moksha – the ultimate goal: freedom from the cycle of birth and rebirth, and union with the divine.

These ideas encourage reflection, compassion, and self-awareness, guiding people to lead lives grounded in kindness, truth, and respect for all beings.

Diversity of Practice and Expression

Hinduism is practiced in many different ways, from daily prayers and meditation to joyful celebrations like Diwali, Holi, and Navratri. Every tradition is rooted in joy, devotion, and community. Music, dance, art, and temples all play a part in expressing the depth and beauty of the faith.

Yoga and meditation, now popular around the world, also come from Hindu philosophy. They’re not just forms of exercise but ways to cultivate mindfulness, balance, and inner peace.

A Living Tradition

Hinduism continues to grow and evolve, inspiring people globally with its timeless messages of mindfulness, interconnectedness, and respect for nature. Its influence extends beyond spirituality, shaping modern ideas about wellness, sustainability, and harmony with the environment.

Through events like Hindu Awareness Week, we aim to share the richness of this tradition with everyone, no matter your background or belief. It’s a celebration of peace, inclusivity, and wisdom that has guided humanity for thousands of years.

As one of Hinduism’s ancient texts beautifully reminds us:

“Truth is one; the wise call it by many names.” — Rig Veda 1.164.46

Hinduism teaches that diversity strengthens us, and that by embracing unity, compassion, and understanding, we can all live more harmoniously with one another and the world around us.

Hinduism and University Life at Queen Mary

At Queen Mary Students’ Union, we’re proud to celebrate the cultural and spiritual diversity that makes our campus community so vibrant. Learning about Hinduism, and other world faiths, helps us build empathy, respect, and curiosity about the world and the people around us.

Events and initiatives led by the Hindu Society, supported by QMSU, give students the chance to explore their faith, share cultural traditions, and engage in meaningful discussions. Whether it’s a temple visit, a festival celebration, or an event like Understanding Hinduism, these experiences offer moments of reflection, connection, and wellbeing, values that sit at the heart of both Hindu philosophy and student life at Queen Mary.

We hope you can join us as we celebrate Hindu Awareness Week from 20-24 October. Everyone is welcome, with lots of special events running throughout the week.
