This year, the Executive Officers have decided to create a Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) students’ working group. The group will include the two part-time BME reps (Giulia and Adina) and 13 other students. The BME reps will be co-chairs of the group and I will be offering oversight this year. The purpose behind the group is to inform the Students’ Union about issues relating to the BME students on our campuses and work towards creating a formal BME network that can officially sit within our governance structure.
This year, we have made a lot of progress with enhancing the BME student experience in our University. In the University’s recent Equality and Diversity report, we have received a public commitment to achieve a Bronze Award in the Race Equality Charter by 2020. This commitment will not only ensure commitment to supporting BME students but will extend to staff and permeate through to the various structures that we have. For the first time ever, there has also been a public recognition for the need to tackle the BME attainment gap and to investigate the causes and cures.
After completing this application there will be a selection process, which will involve both BME representatives, and Vice President Education reviewing the applications and making selections. All personal identifying information will be removed during this process. Myself, and the BME reps are looking forward to receiving your applications!
If you have any questions about this process or form please contact myself, Redwan Shahid, Vice President Education (firstname.lastname@example.org)
Deadline for the application is on Sunday, 18th November (midnight).
