Merger Cup 2017
Last month, we saw the return of the biggest sporting event at QMSU- Merger Cup! Queen Mary students went head to head with Barts and the London students to take the Merger Crown.
There are three categories of games at the Merger Cup; performance, participation and friendly, with each category having a different scoring system. The winning team in a performance game scored 5 points, the winners of a participation game will score three points, and all teams participating in friendly games received one point, regardless of the outcome of the game.
Fixtures took place at Mile End, Lee Valley, QMotion, Farringtons School, Chislehurst and Redbridge, with after-parties taking place simultaneously at the Griff Inn and at Drapers and participants and spectators were treated to food from Rad Burger!
Barts and the London came away victorious on the day, but every team that took part ensured everyone had great matches to watch and created a fantastic atmosphere for all.
A big part of Merger Cup this year has been the Tackle and Talk campaign run by QM and BL Sports Officers Clayton Bevas and Megan Annetts, which aims to tackle stigma around mental health problems in sport across the University. It was great to see so many people showing their support for the campaign through wearing purple wristbands, sock tape, stamps, temporary tattoos and stickers.
This year was our biggest and best Merger Cup yet. Thank you to all who took part in the event!
