Multi-Faith Centre closure

It is with regret we have had to temporarily close the Multi-Faith Centre due to ongoing misuse of the space.

The safety of all students and staff is our ongoing priority during the Covid-19 pandemic. We are also responsible for ensuring the Multi-Faith Centre remains as a space for quiet contemplation and prayer for all. Unfortunately, it is with regret we have had to temporarily close the Multi-Faith Centre in the Students’ Union Hub due to ongoing misuse of the space.

A number of interventions and warnings from our team have continued to be ignored and the space is being used each day for studying and socialising. Our Covid-19 guidelines are also not being adequately followed, with a lack of social distancing, a high number of users not wearing face masks and toilets being used as ablution facilities. There have also been unacceptable incidents of people eating, drinking and playing sports and games in the space.

Closing the Multi-Faith Centre is something we have had to do as a last resort to ensure the safety of all of our students and staff. We apologise to users of the space who have followed the Covid-19 guidelines and used the space for its intended purpose. Alternative faith space can be found at St. Benet’s Chaplaincy on campus or the East London Mosque. Further information about other local places of worship is available on the University website here

The Multi-Faith Centre will remain closed until further notice. Updates will be communicated on our website and via social media.
