You may be aware of the amazing story behind our coffee, but Ground will soon be launching a new brand of tea, with another great story and amazing flavour! Birchall is a family-owned London tea company, with roots in the trade going back over a hundred years.
Since 2011, Birchall Tea has won 47 accolades at the Guild of Fine Food’s prestigious Great Taste Awards and is sourced from sustainable and ethical sources. All their teas are sustainably sourced in a manner which respects both the environment and those who are producing the teas. The supply chain is certified by both the Fairtrade Foundation and the Rainforest Alliance, and are a longstanding member of the Ethical Tea Partnership, who they work in collaboration with to raise the ethical standards of industry-wide practices. The company also works with a local farmers’ co-operative, which has led to a 300% increase in the earnings of the farmers in a sustainable manner.
The company has set up the Birchall Community initiative in order to give back to the communities that help produce the tea. Since 2016, the primary focus of the project has been to support the conservation efforts at the Virunga National Park in Rwanda to help protect its inhabitants, which includes mountain gorillas and other wildlife.
In 2013, the company supported the renovation of two local schools, and in 2014, the company supported the Rwandan Cricket Stadium Foundation, to fund the construction of the first dedicated, international-standard cricket stadium in Rwanda. The company has also supported local Rwandan orphanages and undertook a huge renovation of housing and facilities on the Pfunda Tea Estate.
In the UK, the company’s packing and blending facility in Salisbury is currently being completed, and will be run wholly on solar panels. None of the teabags are made up of any plastic, and although the teabags themselves are not currently recyclable, Birchall are working hard with their suppliers to source an alternative renewable material to make them from.
Birchall tea will be available soon in Ground Café and then in all our Students' Union outlets! To read all about the amazing story of our coffee, click here.
