Queen Mary Students’ Union are saddened to hear about the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and extend our condolences to the Royal Family at this time.

Queen Elizabeth II took the throne in 1952 and was the longest reigning monarch in British history. During her reign, she witnessed a period of significant social change and a transformation in our daily lives. Queen Elizabeth II was also the Patron of our University, a royal link that dates back to 1887 when the People’s Palace Technical Schools were opened by Queen Victoria, and 1934 when East London College became Queen Mary College, named after Mary of Teck, wife of King George V.

Many people in our community may be impacted by this news in different ways, both directly and indirectly, and find this period of uncertainty difficult. Please know that we are here to support you, so please do reach out to us or the University’s services if you need any support.

We recognise this news and topic may raise points for discussion and opinion, however we hope everyone in our community will remain respectful and kind to one another at this time.

The University have also released a statement, this can be viewed here. Our facilities and services will remain open during the official period of mourning. We are also working with the University on how this news may affect planned activities during Arrivals Weekend and Welcome Week and will provide students with updates in due course.
