Queen Mary Students’ Union introduced the Too Good To Go App back in April 2017 in an effort to help avoid food waste on campus. Too Good To Go is an innovative social enterprise and app that aims to put an end to food waste in the hospitality industry.
We introduced the app to help reduce the amount of food that goes to waste on campus, and has provided a platform for students and staff see what extra food is available to buy before it goes out of date at a cheaper price than usual.
Major studies undertaken by the Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP) have estimated that 10 million tonnes of food waste occur every year through UK households, hospitality and food service, food manufacture, retail and wholesale sectors- 60% of which could have been avoided. This waste is valued at around £17 billion a year, and can be associated with around 20 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions.
In the hospitality industry, food waste equals the equivalent of 1.3 billion meals, one sixth of the total served every year. 75% of all food waste from the Hospitality and Food Sector is avoidable. On average, 21% of food waste arises from food spoilage- a figure Too Good To Go is helping tackle.
Good news at Queen Mary
Since introducing the app, 158 meals have been saved from the bin, which equals a huge 133kg of CO2 being saved, as well as 288 hours of electricity consumption for one household.
The outlets that have signed up to the app have seen an average month on month growth of 11.65%, which means more people than ever are saving meals from going to waste! The Village Shop tops the table so far in terms of Students’ Union venues using the app, but you can also use the app at the Union Shop, Ground and the Learning Café!
The app is quickly growing and expanding throughout the UK, so why not try it out? There are loads of different deals you can take advantage of in Mile End alone, so the app is worth downloading and checking out even if you’re not on campus! It’s especially handy if you fancy a Ground panini at the end of a long day studying!
You can find the app on the App Store here or on the Google Play Store here.
