We’re a Living Wage Employer!
After years of campaigning by students and student representatives, Queen Mary Students’ Union now pays all its staff the London Living Wage, as defined by the Living Wage Foundation.
What is the Living Wage?
The real Living Wage is calculated based upon the amount of money people need to live on. Employers pay it voluntarily and it’s independently calculated every year. The London Living Wage reflects the higher cost of living in London and recognises that young people have the same living costs- something that isn’t recognised in the National Minimum Wage or the Government’s Living Wage.
Why do we pay it?
The principle behind paying the Living Wage is to recognise that a hard day’s work deserves fair pay and that every employee should be paid a wage that meets the actual cost of living. At the Annual Member’s Meeting in March 2015, a motion was passed to set a goal for all student staff to be receiving the London Living Wage by 2018, and since then the Students’ Union had been working hard in order to realise this.
It’s a huge achievement to implement the policy a year before the original goal, and it’s testament to the hard work of Student Council and Executive Officers. We’re currently in the first stages of becoming a fully-accredited Living Wage employer!
