The Student Media Conference 2016 will feature a programme of talks and workshops from media industry professionals and recent alumni who were involved with Student Media during their time here. The event concludes with an evening networking sessions over drinks and nibbles.

Wednesday 7th December

4pm – 5pm: Transitioning from Permanent to Freelance, a Q&A with Grace Banks, Arts 2 2.17

This insightful session will give you an in-depth view of what it is like to go and work from a permanent role to freelance in the Media industry, where Grace will be answering any questions you have with regards to this topic. Grace will also be giving her view on what it is like to work in new digital roles. Please do come along with any questions you may have as this is a great opportunity to talk with an expert in her field!

5pm-6pm: An Introduction to PR at QMUL with Rupert Marquand from QMUL Public Relations Team, Arts 2 2.17

This is an opportunity for the heads of each Media outlet to meet with Rupert (who was also previously a journalist) from QMUL’s Public Relations Team and to discuss ways in which your outlet can work with the PR team. He will also be going over any potential pitfalls that might come up when your team are covering stories about or relevant to QMUL. Please note this is for the Heads of Media only.

5.30pm – 7pm: How to get into Radio with Grace Hopper, Broadcast Assistant at BBC1 Radio and 1Xtra, (Room to be confirmed)

Grace Hopper from Radio 1 and 1Xtra will be talking about her journey through student and hospital radio before roles at Heart (Global Radio), BBC Radio Devon, BBC Radio Berkshire to her current role at BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra. She will give you the lowdown of what you need to do to land your dream job, and the opportunities and challenges that will arise on your journey there.

6pm – 7pm: Is it worth it? Completing an MA in Journalism with Polly Benson, Production Assistant at IMG Media, Bancroft 3.26

Explore the MA Journalism opportunities available to you, with insight from Polly Benson who completed an MA in Broadcast Journalism at City University.

6pm – 7pm: From Student Media to The Times, Matt ‘TK’ Taylor, Digital Development Editor at the Times, Bancroft 1.02.6

In this session, Matt will be talking about his journey from Student Media to working for The Times as he gives you an insight into what you need to succeed in the industry and what is happening to the print and online journalism industry.

Thursday 8th December

11am – 1pm: Press Association Masterclass - Interviewing Skills for Journalists with Mark Wray, Head of PA Training at The Press Association (Room to be confirmed)

Come and learn all the necessary skills to conduct the best interviews as journalists. Interviewing is an essential part of journalist and so if you’re a budding journalist, this is a session to attend!

1pm – 2pm: An insight into getting into the Media industry with Yasmine Djadoudi, Broadcast Journalist at The BBC, Arts 2 2.17

Yasmine will be giving an insight into her career and her journey to where she is now while discussing how to get into the industry.

3pm – 4pm: A Talk with John Rentoul, Chief Political Commentator, Independent on Sunday, Formerly Chief Lead Writer for the Independent, Laws G.5

John Rentoul is the Chief Political Commentator for The Independent on Sunday and is also the author of Listellany, Questions to Which The Answer is No and The Banned List. He has also written a biography of Tony Blair. John will be leading a special talk followed by a question and answer session where he will give his own very unique insight into the media industry and the key topics and issues currently affecting the media world. This talk is one not to miss!

4pm – 6pm: Q & A Panel with Hannah Sargeant, Freelance Journalist, Online Editor at Spindle Magazine, Editor-in-Chief at Mothership Magazine, Lizzie Dearden, Senior Reporter at the Independent, Matt Capon, Student Media Hyperspecialist, and Jem Collins, Freelance Video, Online and Social Journalist, Queen’s Building Room W206

Our panel of guest speakers will explore the pathways to getting into Media using their own personal insights and handy tips and advice, while answering your media related questions. It is bound to be a highly interesting discussion. The panel will be chaired by Jem Collins, a freelance video, online and social journalist.
