Findings from Russell Group Students' Union Research into Gender-Based Violence

Your President 24/25 led on a new RGSU report exploring students' experiences of gender-based violence across universities.

Your Voice

Queen Mary Students' Union President 24/25, Diya, led on a new Russell Group Students' Unions report exploring students' experiences of gender-based violence across Russell Group universities.

Drawing on responses from more than 1,000 students alongside focus group discussions, the research found that half of respondents had experienced at least one form of gender-based violence during university, while 47% had witnessed or heard about an incident.

The report also found a significant gap between experiences of gender-based violence and formal reporting. Of the 439 students who disclosed an experience, fewer than 20 said they had formally reported it to their university or the police. Students cited uncertainty about whether their experience was serious enough to report, as well as concerns about being believed and whether meaningful action would be taken.

Students' perceptions of safety varied too, with 98% feeling safe on campus during the day, compared with 72% after dark.

The report highlights the need for accessible reporting processes, survivor-centered report and continued prevention work across students' university experience.

The report was made possible by the students who took the time to share their experiences through the survey and focus groups. Your contributions have helped build a clearer picture of gender-based violence across Russell Group universities and will be used to create a safer and more supportive university environment for all students.
