What have your Exec Officers been up to?

With Welcome and Freshers bringing lots of new faces to Queen Mary, it’s been a busy few weeks for your Executive Officers. From meeting students at events and induction talks to hearing about their experiences and progressing projects, the team have been getting out across campus and helping students settle into university life.

Freshers was a real highlight, with the Freshers Fair receiving great feedback and events running smoothly. Maria saw students enjoying the spoof lecture, comedy night and Freshers Opening Party, which stayed open until midnight for the first time in several years. The BL Families event was also well received, giving new students the chance to connect with other students and more experienced members of the community. There was plenty of enthusiasm from students getting involved, too, with 55 volunteers signing up to help with move-in weekend, up from around 41 last year.

The team have been making the most of these events to meet students and introduce themselves. Ashpreet particularly enjoyed chatting with societies about their plans for the year and how the Exec can support them. She also joined Shakshi at the Library’s Get Ahead event, where they had lots of one-to-one conversations with students. Shakshi has been focused on making the start of term as smooth as possible for students, while Maria has been answering questions about Course Reps and helping students find the right support for their concerns.

There have also been plenty of opportunities to hear directly from students about their university experience. Maria attended a talk for medical students and shared feedback on the changing needs of students around mental health and neurodivergence, which the speaker welcomed. Ashpreet has also started receiving questions from students through Instagram and email, giving her new opportunities to offer guidance and help students work out where to turn for support.

Riley has been enjoying seeing campus come to life during Welcome, from delivering welcome talks to catching up with societies at the Freshers Fair. He also helped out at the Reuse Fair, where students picked up pre-loved items and gave them a new home. Alongside these activities, he’s been looking into concerns students have raised about changes to Turnitin and is taking this work forward through conversations with relevant groups.

Vish has been getting to know more about the student experience at Queen Mary, including visiting the Freshers Fair and speaking with students about the new Co-op and its membership options. These conversations have helped him better understand what students are looking for and the questions they have about everyday costs on campus.

Pradhuman has also been out meeting students during Freshers, encouraging them to find out more about QMSU and get involved in events and activities. He also headed to Flex club night, where he enjoyed the music! Meanwhile, Shakshi is continuing to work with academic departments to follow up on module information issues raised at the start of term, helping make sure students have the information they need for their studies.

With the first few weeks of term now underway, the Exec are continuing to build relationships with students, listen to their experiences and take forward the projects that will help improve university life. Keep an eye out for more updates as their work develops over the coming weeks.

Every two weeks, our Exec Officers will also complete an accountability survey, so you can see exactly which meetings they’ve attended, what actions they’ve taken and what they’re working on next.
