Find out what your Exec Officers have been up to over the past few weeks.
It’s been a busy couple of weeks for your Executive Officers! With move-in weekend, Welcome events, induction talks, training and plenty of meetings, the Exec have been out and about meeting students and getting stuck into their work for the year.
Move-in weekend was a big highlight, with Maria attending a really successful turnout at the BL Freshers Opening Party, the JEP Family Social, BL Families and Direct Clinical Entry Welcome and Shakshi attended events for postgraduate students. Maria has been getting involved in these events while also meeting students who have recently moved in and making sure they feel comfortable reaching out to the Students’ Union.
Shakshi has also been getting out and about meeting students at Residential Life events. She volunteered at Aspire, where she spoke to postgraduate students about their concerns and helped them settle in, before heading to the Big Chill Social and Postgrad Mixer. At both events, she introduced herself and QMSU, answered questions and had one-to-one conversations with students about their experiences and anything they might need support with.
There have been lots of meetings too. Riley has been attending senior meetings including Teaching Programmes Board and other university committees, with student experience and additional support being key themes. Maria has also been busy meeting with students and staff, attending the EQSB Board, Teaching Programmes Board and a Times Higher Education interview. She also met with the former Dental President to explore ways to strengthen engagement with the International Association of Dental Students and create more opportunities for dental students.
Maria has also been working with research institute representatives to understand some of the challenges they are facing and where there may be gaps in support. She’s already met lots of postgraduate students who moved in over the weekend and has been working with her VPs to plan the priorities for the next fortnight.
The Exec have also been making time for training and learning. Riley and Vish attended training at Middlesex University, covering topics including AI, employability and belonging. Vish has also completed Advanced Achieve and governance training at Senate House, as well as attending the Senate Summit, where he learned more about international work happening across the University.
The team have also been connecting with other student representatives. Most of the Exec attended the Student Rep Training Day, where they met the part-time officers taking on rep roles and started building relationships with the students who will be helping represent their communities throughout the year.
Ashpreet has been particularly busy with induction activity. She delivered a DDS induction talk, which was a big personal milestone after not public speaking for a long time. Despite having a few nerves beforehand, it went really well, and she’s now got several more induction talks coming up this week. She has also been getting involved in Residential Life events and attending meetings including ECSU, the Student Participation Support Fund and External Speakers Review.
There’s been plenty happening outside of meetings too. Riley helped out at the Reuse Fair over the weekend, helping students pass on unwanted items and giving unwanted things a new home. Vish also attended the launch of the Centre for Volunteering and Outreach programme, which showcased new opportunities coming from the Students’ Union.
Pradhuman has been out around campus during the week, chatting to students about QMSU and encouraging them to get involved in events and activities. He’s also continuing work on his Course Rep video, which aims to help students understand what Course Reps do and why getting involved can make a difference to their university experience. He’s currently bringing the final pieces together and hopes to get the video out this week.
